The colourful, chic town and ancient port of la rochelle, together with the many sun-drenched sandy island beaches on the beautiful ile de re are only about half an hour away. A little further south you can explore the historic town of rochefort, swim at chatelaillon-plage or enjoy the glorious beaches of ile d'oleron and royan, spend time inland sightseeing in the roman town of saintes and sample the delights of cognac on the banks of the river charente. Within 30 minutes from surgeres to the north, you could relax with a leisurely boat trip on the canals of the marais poitevin, otherwise known as the green venice. Whilst poitiers, home to futuroscope, (france's second most popular attraction after disneyland, paris) is within easy reach along the a10 motorway link.
